1 Termites

Often eaten raw as tasty snacks, termites are plucked right out of whatever wood they are feasting on or caught en masse around lights, where they also like to swarm. It can be found during rainy season. Then they are sold at markets and brought home to be roasted over hot coals or fried in oil.

 

2 Snakes

Snakes are a big part of Nigerian food culture; they are often roasted or stewed to serve. They are served in stew or peppersoup.

3 Palm Weevil Larva

A rural staple that’s high in protein, potassium and calcium, this fat grub is eaten in one of several ways: straight from the tree; skewered and roasted over hot coals; or fried in sago flour and then wrapped in a leaf.

 

4 Locusts

Locusts are the swarming phase of certain species of short-horned grasshoppers in the family Acrididae. It is usually prepared with pepper, scent leaves and vegetable oil in the middle belt.

 

5 crickets

Crickets are very meaty. So if you pan fry them, they taste a bit like sausages. It is eaten by the South-South people.

 

I have eaten 1, 3 and 5. 

 I know how to catch and prepare termites well. I use to eat it raw when I was in secondary school

I didn’t like palm larva much. It tastes like the fatty area of meat and it’s commonly sold in Bayelsa.

Crickets taste nice but they digust me. 

I heard snakes taste like fish. And fish is sweet you know…
